Safe Combination Puzzle Tutorial For Visual Novels Made With Ren’Py

July 7, 2022

A while ago when I started this series, I thought it would be a fun idea to make a safe-unlocking puzzle tutorial for visual novels made with Ren’Py. Could be fun to implement in a detective type visual novel or the like, perhaps where the main character has to unlock a safe to get the contents. Actually that sound more like a thief than a detective… but anyways.

If you want to go straight to the tutorial, you can watch it on my Youtube channel: Ren’Py Safe Combination Mini-game Tutorial.

Today, I finished the tutorial series which ended up being 6 parts in total. One of the commenters for one of my other series gave me some feedback after I asked people for their input about the length of the videos (I asked if people preferred longer or shorter videos), and they mentioned I could try make shorter videos in between the really long ones (the last part of the shooting gallery series got a little over 50 minutes long!).

So I decided to try to make sure that videos overall are much shorter (maybe 15-20 minutes) to make the content easier to digest, and the long timestamp on the video wont be so daunting to see when you first open the video up, hehe 😁.

So what does the tutorial series teach? Well I show you how to make a safe dial able to be rotated to select different values to form a combination. If you get the combination right, you unlock the safe and get rich! Or maybe not… in this tutorial, you’ll get a book, but maybe the book will teach you something valuable, so it’s all good anyways! 😉

On the safe is also a handle with an indicator light on it that will light up green or red depending on if you entered the correct combination or not. There’s also a success sound or an error sound that will play in either scenarios.

So if it sounds interesting and you haven’t checked it out already, you can watch the tutorial on my Youtube channel.

And for those who are Patreons of mine in the Supporter tier or higher get to download the finished script as well. So if you’re interested in getting it directly, then consider becoming a Patreon of mine and also get access to all the other scripts available for Patreons only.

Thanks for reading! Do leave a comment below and let me know what you think of this tutorial series.
